A shabby door and a story of cruelty

The book opens with Mr. Utterson, a London lawyer. He is strict with himself but gentle with other people's faults, and he is often the last decent friend a man on his way down still has.

Every Sunday he walks with his distant relative, Richard Enfield. One Sunday their route takes them down a bright street of well-kept shops. Between two of them stands a blank, blistered building with a single door.

Enfield says it belongs to a strange story. At three on a dark winter morning, he sees a small man and a running girl collide at a corner. The man tramples the child and walks on. Enfield catches him, and everyone present feels the same hatred for the stranger.

They make him pay one hundred pounds. He unlocks the shabby door with his own key and returns with gold and a check signed with a respected name. The bank honors it. The man is called Hyde, and Enfield cannot say what is wrong with his looks, only that he gives a sense of deformity. Utterson goes quiet, for he knows more than he says.

A single act of cruelty at a plain door starts the mystery, and its first clue is a man nobody can describe.
