À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

Parents and grandparents who love reading aloud, children who enjoy kings, fairies and talking animals, and anyone who likes gentle Christmas stories with songs, rhymes and a kindly voice.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

Picture a traveling teller of tales knocking at a cottage door with a harp at his side. The children gather, the room goes still, and he begins with the words once upon a time. That is how Maud Lindsay opens The Story-Teller, a book of twelve fairy tales for young children. A blacksmith's hammer sings, a prince hunts for a plant, a harper walks through a storm, and a fairy climbs a giant's chimney. Several tales are set at Christmas, and some end with songs.

A singing hammer and a jar of rosemary

The first story follows two brothers who are seldom apart as boys. The elder becomes a trusted counselor at the king's court. The younger builds a smithy by the road, and his hammer seems to sing that the one who does his best is fit to serve the king.

When a duke threatens the land, the elder brother rides out to bring a message of goodwill by Christmas Eve. On the way home, his horse loses a shoe before sunrise.

The second tale is The Jar of Rosemary. A little prince learns that his mother, the queen, longs for rosemary. He goes himself to an old woman's window to find it.
