This book suits readers who enjoy a warm, chatty narrator, vivid eccentrics and a true-feeling account of starting out in life, with big questions asked over a pipe.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What would you do with eleven shillings and sixpence, a rented house and a brass nameplate, and no patients at all? That is the position of Dr. John Stark Munro, a young Scottish physician in the early 1880s. He tells it all in letters to his old friend Bertie Swanborough, who has gone home to America.
The Stark Munro Letters is a novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, drawn from his own early years as a doctor. Munro writes about money, work, family pride, and the doubts about God that keep him awake. He also writes about James Cullingworth, a loud, brilliant doctor who sweeps through the letters like weather. You get a comic and moving portrait of a young man trying to stand on his own feet.

Point clé 1 sur 11
Munro introduces the unforgettable Cullingworth
The letters open with a portrait. Munro wants Bertie to know the man whose life may soon be tied to his own. That man is James Cullingworth, a fellow student at the university.
Cullingworth is ugly, strong and loud. He plays savage rugby, wears no necktie, and laughs like a bull. He wins the anatomy prize without seeming to work, and he sketches new torpedoes on the backs of envelopes. His mind runs ahead to patents and fortunes before anyone can ask whether the idea works. He is also dangerous, and a friendly scuffle can turn into a real fight in a moment.
There is a quiet side too. He marries a timid woman called Hetty, who adores him, and they live above a grocer's shop. Then a telegram arrives saying Munro is needed at once. A bold friend can open doors, but he can bring trouble through them as well.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.
