De quoi parle ce livre ?
A banker slumps at a directors' table in a crowded Wall Street office. A bullet is lodged in his neck, yet nobody heard a shot or found a gun. That is the first puzzle in The Silent Bullet, and the man who takes it on is a chemistry professor.
Arthur B. Reeve wrote these tales about Craig Kennedy, the scientific detective. Reporter Walter Jameson tells each one. You get twelve self-contained mysteries, each solved with real laboratory methods, and the endings stay hidden.

Kennedy argues that science belongs in police work
The book opens with two old roommates arguing. Craig Kennedy teaches chemistry in New York. His friend Walter Jameson writes for the Star. Kennedy complains that no college has a chair in criminal science, and he means to bring laboratory methods to crime.
Jameson thinks a detective is born, not taught. Kennedy answers that professors already help settle labor disputes, so why not catch criminals? He adds that a scientific detective must work with the police, not against them.
He proves it with a case from a Western town. The police sent him a bloodstained scrap of handkerchief, and he tested the blood. A telegram soon says the suspect confessed when he met the evidence. That persuades Inspector Barney O'Connor, and the partnership of professor, reporter and police begins.
Science and the police work best as partners.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about La Balle silencieuse
What is The Silent Bullet about?
It is a collection of twelve tales about Craig Kennedy, a chemistry professor who uses science to solve crimes in New York. His friend Walter Jameson, a newspaper reporter, tells each story, and Inspector O'Connor of the police helps.
Who is Craig Kennedy and who is Walter Jameson?
Kennedy is a university chemistry professor who investigates crimes with laboratory methods. Jameson is his roommate and a reporter on the Star. He narrates each case and helps by gathering facts and gossip.
Are the scientific methods in the book real?
Many were real or newly discovered when the book appeared, such as fingerprints, blood tests, X-rays, radium, the seismograph and the dictograph. Reeve took actual research and gave it to a fictional detective, so it reads as invention built on fact.
Is The Silent Bullet easy to follow?
Yes, in the sense that each case is a self-contained story with a clear question, short scenes and plain dialogue. Kennedy explains each instrument in a lecture, so you can enjoy the puzzles without special knowledge of chemistry.
Which cases are in the collection?
Among the collection’s twelve tales are The Silent Bullet, The Scientific Cracksman, The Diamond Maker, The Azure Ring, The Seismograph Adventure and The Terror in the Air.
