À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers who enjoy a crime story with a literary edge, and anyone curious about Chekhov before his famous plays. Mystery, desire, betrayal and a circle of people with secrets give this rural Russian tale its dark appeal.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

The Shooting Party is the only full-length novel by Anton Chekhov. He wrote it in the early 1880s, when he was a young medical student in Moscow who paid his way by writing humorous sketches for magazines. It first appeared in installments in a newspaper, and it is a crime story set among Russian landowners, officials and country people.

The book is built like a detective tale, with a death, an inquiry and a set of people who all have something to hide. Yet it is also a study of idleness, vanity and desire in a world where power belongs to a few. In the next minutes you will meet the setting, the main figures, the mood of the story and the way Chekhov tells it. We begin with the country estate where the tale takes place.

A country estate where trouble gathers

The story is set in rural Russia in the nineteenth century. This is the world Chekhov knew well from his stories: estates, small towns, forests and the long distances between them. Landowners have time on their hands, officials have rank, and ordinary people depend on both.

At the center is a count, a man of title and money. Around him gather the people who live from his favor, or who are drawn by his house and its parties. Hunting, drinking and talk fill the days. Chekhov shows how easily such leisure turns into jealousy and carelessness.

There is also a young woman, the daughter of a forester, whose beauty and poor position make her both admired and exposed. The story watches how the men around her see her, and how little they ask what she herself wants. From the start, the reader feels that this calm country life rests on something fragile, and that a single event could break it.
