The Secret Garden, Chapter 3 summary

Chapter 3 of 27 · 6 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 3, Mary Lennox travels with Mrs. Medlock across a dark, windswept moor to Misselthwaite Manor, feeling uneasy about the landscape and the unfamiliar house. On arrival, she learns that a man there refuses to see her, and Mrs. Medlock orders her to remain in two rooms.

What happens

  1. Mary and Mrs. Medlock eat and sleep on the train before reaching Thwaite Station after dark.
  2. A carriage takes them through a village and onto Missel Moor, where Mary compares the darkness and wind to the sea.
  3. Mary dislikes the bleak crossing, while Mrs. Medlock welcomes the first light from the lodge.
  4. They pass through the gates and along a wooded avenue before reaching the large, dimly lit manor.
  5. Mr. Pitcher instructs Mrs. Medlock to keep Mary from disturbing a man who refuses to see her.
  6. Mrs. Medlock leads Mary to a warm room with supper and orders her to stay within two adjoining rooms.
