À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers who love gentle satire, fairy tales told with a straight face, and Wells in a lighter mood, with a love story that sets desire against duty.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

The Sea Lady is a short comic novel by H. G. Wells, published in 1902. Wells was best known then for scientific romances such as The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds. Here he turns to an older kind of wonder, the mermaid of folk tale, and sets her down in the middle of ordinary English seaside life. The result is a light, teasing fantasy with a serious current under it.

A creature from the deep comes ashore at an English resort and tries to pass as a lady among respectable holidaymakers. They are polite, curious and anxious about what the neighbours will think. She is bold, direct and bound by none of their rules. You get a love story, a social comedy and a quiet argument about what a person gives up for safety. The first key point is the simplest one, the arrival itself, and how a whole seaside town tries to cope with it.

A mermaid arrives at an English resort

The story begins on the south coast of England, in the world of lodging houses, promenades and holiday families. The setting is the Kent shore around Sandgate, a place made for rest and small talk. Into this calm comes a visitor from the sea, a young woman who is not a woman at all in the ordinary sense. She is a mermaid, and she has come on purpose.

Wells does not treat the event with awe. He treats it as a social problem. How do you introduce a sea creature to a respectable household? What do you say to the neighbours? The comedy lies in the way people reach for their usual manners, even when the facts in front of them have no place in those manners.

The Sea Lady herself is not a victim or a dreamy figure drifting in the foam. She is self-possessed, curious and quick to speak. She knows what she wants and she says so in a plain way that startles those around her. Her calm is more unsettling than any fuss would be.

The local family who take her in have to decide how to present her. Her manner is frank and her story is odd, so each explanation they try has to be dressed up to fit the rules of polite society. From the first chapters you see the method of the book. A marvel arrives, and the comedy is in how ordinary people fit it into their lives.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about La Dame de la mer

What is The Sea Lady about?

It is a comic fantasy in which a mermaid comes ashore at an English seaside resort and tries to live among respectable people. Her arrival disturbs a young man's settled plans and tests the manners of those around her.

When was The Sea Lady written?

H. G. Wells published it in 1902. It is a work of fiction, not a true story, and it belongs to the years when he moved between scientific romances and comic novels of English life.

Is The Sea Lady like The Time Machine or The War of the Worlds?

Not much. It is a light, ironic fantasy about love and social manners, not a work of science and catastrophe. Its interest in how society meets the strange does link it to his other books.

Is The Sea Lady based on The Little Mermaid?

It draws on the old mermaid tradition, which includes Hans Christian Andersen's tale. Wells gives it a comic, English setting and a satirical tone, so it reads as his own answer rather than a retelling.

What does the sea mean in The Sea Lady?

The sea stands for freedom, depth and desire that cannot be fitted into polite life. The shore stands for duty, order and belonging. The story sets the two against each other without calling one simply right.
