The Scarlet Letter, Chapter 19 summary

Chapter 19 of 25 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 19, Pearl refuses to approach Hester Prynne until her mother puts the scarlet letter back on and covers her hair, interrupting the adults' hopeful reunion. Although Pearl then embraces Hester, she resists Arthur Dimmesdale, asks whether he can accompany them publicly, and washes his kiss from her forehead.

What happens

  1. Hester and Arthur Dimmesdale watch Pearl approach and discuss her resemblance to them and her possible affection for him.
  2. Pearl stops across the brook, points at Hester's breast, and erupts in anger when her mother calls her.
  3. Hester retrieves the scarlet letter, fastens it on again, and covers her hair, losing her newly radiant appearance.
  4. Pearl crosses the brook, embraces Hester, and kisses both her face and the letter.
  5. Pearl asks whether the minister can return to town with them, but Hester says not now.
  6. Forced to approach Dimmesdale, Pearl washes away his kiss and watches apart as the adults arrange their plans.
