Chapter 13 of 25 · 12 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Hester Prynne recognizes the harm Roger Chillingworth does to Mr. Dimmesdale and resolves to confront her former husband to help the minister. The account of her charity, changed reputation, and independent thinking shows how years of punishment strengthen her while failing to bring her mind under society’s rule.

What happens

  1. Hester sees Mr. Dimmesdale’s mental weakness and feels bound by their shared crime to help him.
  2. Her years of nursing and charity earn public respect, and many townspeople interpret her badge as meaning Able.
  3. Outwardly severe and withdrawn, Hester privately questions social rules and the position of women.
  4. Her thoughts grow despairing, but the minister’s suffering gives her a new purpose.
  5. She resolves to confront Roger Chillingworth and sees him gathering medicinal plants while she walks with Pearl.
