Who Diggory Venn is

Diggory Venn sells reddle, the red ochre farmers use to mark their sheep. His work leaves him stained all over, making his appearance striking among the people of Egdon Heath. Early in the story, he carries Thomasin in his van after a fault in the marriage licence prevents her wedding.

What Diggory Venn wants

Venn wants Thomasin to be happy, even though she has rejected his courtship partly because of his trade. He does not become bitter, but chooses instead to watch over her welfare. His loyalty can mean helping Damon Wildeve, the man Thomasin hopes to marry and someone Venn distrusts.

Diggory Venn and the others in the story

Thomasin's uncertain position draws Venn into the troubled relationship between her and Wildeve. While Wildeve's feelings waver, Venn shows his care through watchfulness and practical action. His unusual appearance marks him as an outsider, but his conduct reveals quiet loyalty.
