The Republic, Book 6 summary

Book 6 of 10 · 45 min to read the book

In Book 6, Socrates argues that philosophers should govern because they understand unchanging truth, but Adeimantus challenges him with their apparent uselessness and corruption. Socrates blames cities for neglecting genuine thinkers and ruining gifted minds, then outlines an education that gives philosophy greater attention as people mature.

What happens

  1. Socrates and Glaucon identify the knowledge, character, memory, and love of truth that qualify philosophers to govern.
  2. Adeimantus objects that committed philosophers commonly become corrupt or useless, despite the argument for their rule.
  3. Socrates compares neglected philosophers to a skilled pilot dismissed by sailors who fight over command without understanding navigation.
  4. He argues that public pressure, flattery, wealth, and poor education corrupt gifted natures, while unworthy imitators damage philosophy’s reputation.
  5. A few genuine philosophers preserve themselves by avoiding politics, but no existing government provides the conditions they need.
  6. Socrates proposes age-appropriate study, bodily preparation, and increasing intellectual training; Adeimantus anticipates strong resistance.
