À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

You will love this if you enjoy classic whodunits with fair clues, society drawing rooms, twin sisters, secret loves, and a detective chase through the Washington of the 1920s.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

The Red Seal is a detective novel by Natalie Sumner Lincoln, set in Washington soon after the First World War. It opens in a police court, where a wealthy young woman has just had a burglar arrested in her own home. Within the hour the burglar is dead, and the men around him discover that he is a respected bank cashier in disguise. A simple wager, it seems, has ended in tragedy. But a young woman stands up and demands an autopsy, and the peace of a whole household begins to crack.

From there the book moves quickly through drawing rooms, law offices, a trust company, a crowded club and a house with a room that has seven doors. Lincoln gives you a handkerchief with an embroidered letter, a poison with an unfamiliar name, a sealed envelope that keeps changing hands, and a lawyer who vanishes. A young attorney named Harry Kent tries to untangle it all while a stern deadline presses on him.

What you get is a puzzle built on fair clues, a crowd of suspects who all seem to be hiding something, and a love story running underneath. The twin sisters at the center sometimes trade places, and that matters more than you might guess. Keep an eye on the letter B, which turns up again and again. Let us begin in the police court, on the morning of the arrest.

A burglar's arrest ends in death

The story begins in a Washington police court. Benjamin Clymer, president of the Metropolis Trust Company, has just finished speaking as a character witness in a quarrel between a husband and wife. As he steps down, his friend Philip Rochester, a lawyer, pulls him aside and asks whether Miss Helen McIntyre has been in. Clymer says no. Then Helen walks up the aisle with her twin sister Barbara and their family doctor, Amos Stone, and every eye in the room follows them.

Helen has come to charge a man with housebreaking. She tells the court that she was waiting up for her sister in the early morning, went down to the library, and saw a man slip into a coat closet. She turned the key on him, ran to the window, and called to Officer O'Ryan, who was standing under a street lamp. The prisoner gives his name as John Smith. He wears a frayed collar and a threadbare suit, and he has no lawyer, so Rochester offers to defend him.

The case looks clear, and the judge holds the man for trial. Smith demands a jury, then breaks into a fit of coughing and begs for water. Rochester hands him a cup across the iron railing of the prisoners' cage. Dr. Stone, who has been watching, sees that the man is gasping for breath. He demands to be let in, and with Clymer's help he carries the prisoner into a small side room.

There Stone feels for a heartbeat and says the man is dead. The deputy marshal pushes back the untidy hair, and a wig slips away to show short red hair. Clymer gasps out the name of Jimmie Turnbull. The dead burglar is the cashier of Clymer's own bank and the roommate of Rochester, who sinks into a chair and stares.

Rochester is quick to say that Turnbull suffered from angina pectoris, a painful heart disease, and that no coroner is needed. Detective Ferguson of the Central Office wonders why a bank officer is wearing rags and a wig. The twins are brought in, and Barbara says that Jimmie has won his wager. Then Helen, white to the lips, calls herself his fiancée and demands an autopsy. Nobody in the room expects that.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
