Point clé 1 sur 9

A spy hides inside a loyalist household

Carus works in Sir Peter Coleville's house on Wall Street in July 1781. For four years he has sent secret reports to Colonel Willett through a tobacconist named Ennis. He fears the day the crowds on Broadway watch him hang.

Worse, he has grown fond of the people he deceives. Sir Peter and Lady Coleville treat him as family. Every spare coin of his salary goes to the starving men in the prisons and on the prison ships.

A drover gives him a puzzle. Is the lost town of Thendara only a code name for Fort Niagara? Then he meets Elsin Grey, a lively young guest from Canada. She teases him and says she read his secret journal entry backward from the wet ink on his shirt. She means only a joke.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Le Règlement de comptes

What is The Reckoning by Robert W. Chambers about?

It follows Carus Renault, a young spy for Washington in British-held New York in 1781, as he hunts for a lost town called Thendara, crosses into rebel lines, and then faces the Ranger captain Walter Butler on the frontier.

What does Thendara mean in the book?

Thendara is a name from the Iroquois Rite of Condolence. It stands for a lost town that exists only in ceremony, and the council fire there is where the Long House plans its policy.

Is The Reckoning a true story?

It is a novel set among real events of 1781, such as the siege of New York, the march to Yorktown and the raid on Johnstown.

Who is Walter Butler in the story?

He is a captain of Butler's Rangers, a pale, graceful loyalist officer who sings beautifully and plans to burn the northern grain country. Historical accounts link the real Butler to the Cherry Valley raid.

Is The Reckoning easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that it has a clear first-person narrator and lively dialogue. The plot moves from drawing-room wit to forest adventure, so the thread is easy to hold.
