À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
This book suits readers who enjoy the history of ideas, the roots of sociology and modern science, and the question of how a society finds common ground.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What do you do when a revolution has torn down the old order and nothing stands ready to replace it? That was the question facing French thinkers in the early nineteenth century, and Auguste Comte gave it the most systematic answer of his age. He said that society cannot be rebuilt by new laws alone. It must first share a body of beliefs that every mind can accept.
This book is Lucien Lévy-Bruhl's study of that answer. He was a French philosopher, and he shows Comte's positive philosophy as one connected whole, from the law of the three states to the founding of sociology and the ethics of living for others. You also meet the critics who weighed it.

Rebuild society by first rebuilding beliefs
The French Revolution leaves Europe with a question nobody can set aside. What should come after the old regime? Saint-Simon and Joseph de Maistre both ask it in their own ways. Comte cannot be understood apart from this moment.
Most reformers offer a plan for new institutions. Comte thinks this must fail. Institutions depend on morals, he says, and morals depend on beliefs. Until minds share a general system of opinions, any plan for institutions is pure nonsense.
So Comte decides to be a philosopher first. He wants a foundation for morality, politics and religion, as Catholic doctrine once was, yet resting on proof and not on revelation. Most people would accept it on trust, as we accept the solar system of Copernicus and Newton. Social repair begins with a shared and tested understanding of the world.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about La Philosophie d’Auguste Comte
What is The Philosophy of Auguste Comte about?
It explains Comte's positive philosophy, which holds that all real knowledge concerns phenomena and their laws. It follows his law of the three states, his ladder of the sciences, his founding of sociology and his ethics.
What does positivism mean in Comte's work?
Positivism is the view that knowledge is limited to observed phenomena and the laws that connect them. It sets aside searches for hidden causes or essences and applies this method to society as well as nature.
What is the law of the three states?
It says every branch of knowledge moves from a theological state, which explains events by wills, through a metaphysical state of abstract entities, to a positive state that seeks laws only.
Did Comte invent sociology?
Lévy-Bruhl says yes. Comte first called it social physics and later coined the name sociology. He placed it at the top of the sciences and built his philosophy and ethics upon it.
Is this book a good way to understand Comte?
Yes for many readers, because Lévy-Bruhl arranges the system clearly, links each idea to its sources in Descartes, Condorcet, Saint-Simon and others, and explains the main criticisms in plain steps.
