De quoi parle ce livre ?

Picture a rider on an autumn road who comes on an old stone house at the edge of a forest. It has ten large windows, but only two ever received frames. Scaffolding still clings to the walls. Who built this fine house, and why did no one finish it?

That question opens The Old Stone House and Other Stories by Anna Katharine Green, a nineteenth century American writer of detective fiction. The book gathers five tales of love, crime and doubt, each told by someone who was there. You get their people and turning points, and you learn what ties them together.

Point clé 1 sur 8

An old man's manuscript opens the mystery

The first story begins with a rider on a quiet road in New York State. He stops before a stone house at the edge of a forest. Only two of its ten large windows ever received frames. Upstairs, something grips his arm in the dark, and he finds it is only a twig grown through the window.

At the inn he asks the landlady why the house has stood empty so long. She glances at her father, a man of ninety, and says that talk of the house excites him too much. The old man will not be silenced. He fetches a roll of yellow paper, a record he wrote when the events happened, fifty years earlier. He presses it into the stranger's hand with a sly wink.

You are handed a witness's own pages to judge for yourself. They are written by Philo Adams, who is twenty and in love. He writes in the present tense, so you live each day as he does, without knowing what comes next.

A ruined house and a witness's yellow pages promise a truth that only the pages themselves can tell.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
