À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

De quoi parle ce livre ?

The Ocean Wireless Boys and the Naval Code is a boys' adventure novel by John Henry Goldfrap, the fourth book in a series about Jack Ready, a young ship's wireless operator. It was written in the early years of radio at sea, when sending a message through the air still felt like a marvel. Goldfrap wrote for young readers who liked machines, ships and quick action, and he worked real wireless ideas into the fun.

In this book Jack, his friend Billy Raynor and a red-haired joker named Noddy Nipper begin on holiday among the Thousand Islands. Then they stumble on a secret. A navy captain is writing a new wireless code for the fleet, and a band of crooks wants to steal it. Along the way you meet a runaway bear, a burning ship full of wild animals, a diamond thief in disguise and an invention that listens to every signal in the sky. Let us start on the water, where a rich boy and a sailboat make the first trouble.

A holiday collision starts a feud

The story opens on Alexandria Bay, above the Thousand Islands. Jack Ready, Billy Raynor and Noddy Nipper are sailing the sloop Curlew, enjoying a rest after their hard adventures in the Arctic. Noddy, once a Bowery waif, loves collecting big words from the dictionary, and he keeps getting them wrong. His mix-up over an eighty-year-old doughnut gives the book its first laugh.

Then a larger sloop, the Speedaway, bears down on them. At the helm is Donald Judson, a rich and sneering boy, and beside him sits his father Hiram Judson, a millionaire. Days earlier Jack had knocked Donald flat for tormenting a dog, and Donald has sworn revenge. After a near miss, a second pass rips into the side of the Curlew, and the Judsons sail off and leave the boys to sink.

Jack steers the leaking boat toward shore, tilting her so the hole rides above the water, until she grounds on a shoal. Help comes from a surprising friend, Captain Simms of the revenue cutter Thespis, who was camping ashore and saw the whole thing. He tows them to a mumbling old boat builder named Hansen, whose chewing tobacco turns his speech into one long word.

Simms goes oddly quiet when he hears the name Judson. He will only say that he is doing special work for the government. The boys do not know it yet, but that work will pull them into the biggest adventure of their holiday.

This opening sets up the whole book. A petty quarrel between boys becomes a contest with real crooks, and the first clues are small ones, like a captain who will not explain himself.

It also shows who Jack is. He is quick, kind to animals and loyal, and he thinks before he acts.

Noddy and Billy fill out the team with humor and courage.

The book wastes no time before getting everyone into trouble.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
