À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

You will enjoy this if you love fast adventure, bold escapes and sea voyages, or if rough heroes who learn decency win your heart.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What happens to a man who has never done an honest day's work when he wakes in a ship's bunk, drugged and far out at sea? Billy Byrne, a hoodlum from Chicago's West Side, sets out to rob a drunken sailor in San Francisco. A few hours later he is the one who has been robbed of his freedom.

The Mucker is an adventure novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan. It carries Billy from Chicago's alleys to a pirate plot, a wreck, a murder trial and the road to Mexico. Through it all runs one question: can a brute change, and what will it cost him?

Point clé 1 sur 10

A Chicago street fighter learns his trade

Billy Byrne grows up in the alleys of Chicago's West Side. At six he carries the beer pail for the older gang behind Kelly's feed store, and that is where his schooling begins.

By ten he steals brass faucets, and by twelve he robs freight cars. His first real fight, over a split of the loot, ends with a brick in his hand and a rival named Sheehan in hospital. At seventeen he learns the craft at Larry Hilmore's boxing gym, but he cannot leave the booze alone, and the holdups go on at night.

Two years after Billy rescues Patrolman Stanley Lasky, Lasky warns him that Sheehan, arrested for shooting Schneider the saloonkeeper, has named Billy as the killer. Billy did not do it, but nobody will believe that. He rides a freight west with a murder charge behind him.

Billy's roughness is taught by his surroundings, and that is why it can be unlearned.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
