De quoi parle ce livre ?
What would you do if a ray of sunset light snapped like a thread, and the next day you found a footprint two hundred feet long pressed into a mountain slope? Dr. Walter Goodwin, a botanist, faces exactly that in a valley of blue poppies in Tibet. He has gone there to forget a great loss. Instead he meets something that thinks, moves, and strikes, and is made entirely of metal.
The Metal Monster is a novel by Abraham Merritt, told as Goodwin's own account. You get a fast adventure and a close look at a very strange idea of life.

Point clé 1 sur 10
A grieving man finds a friend among poppies
Goodwin opens his tale in July, camped in a valley carpeted with blue poppies. He has wandered since March through Persia and the high ranges, trying to dull a sorrow that followed him home. His companion is Chiu-Ming, a Chinese man who cooks better than anyone within ten thousand miles of Pekin.
Then a young American strides down a brown hillside. He is Richard Drake, a giant of an engineer fresh from the war in France. Over supper the two men take to each other at once.
At sunset the valley blazes with violet, green, and rose light. A rosy ray in the sky splits into six beams, which sway faster and faster until they snap, as if a hand had broken them and drawn the ends down into the northern peaks. Goodwin offers magnetism, but Drake says it felt deliberate, like a metal claw striking every nerve. Chiu-Ming whispers about devils.
Grief sends a man into the wilderness, and the wilderness answers with a puzzle his training cannot close.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
