Résumé de L’Homme de Manchester
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers who love character-driven Victorian fiction and anyone curious about the making of industrial Manchester, with its rivalries, loyalties, love and questions of belonging.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
The Manchester Man is a historical novel by Mrs. G. Linnaeus Banks, who was born in Manchester and wrote about it with a native's affection. It was published in 1876. The story begins in the closing years of the eighteenth century and follows a life through the years when Manchester grew from a crowded market town into the great cotton city of the age. At its center is Jabez Clegg, a foundling raised by a working family in the town.
This book gives you two things at once. It is a story of one man making a place for himself, with rivals, loyalties and love. It is also a picture of a town changing, with its streets, rivers, warehouses, wars, hunger and political unrest. Banks wanted her readers to feel the weight of the past in the city they knew. Let us begin where the story begins, with a flood and a child.

A flood brings a child to Manchester
The novel opens with a disaster. The River Irk, which runs through the poorer parts of old Manchester, rises in flood in 1799, and the water sweeps through the low streets and dye works along its banks. In the chaos, a baby is carried along on the water and is rescued by people who live near the river. This opening gives the book its hero and its central question. Who is this child, and where did he come from?
The baby is taken in by a Manchester family named Clegg and is given the name Jabez. He grows up as one of their own, loved and brought up in plain, hard-working ways. Yet he is always a child with a hidden beginning. Nobody in the town can say whose son he is.
Banks uses the flood to do more than start the plot. She shows the Irk as a working river, crowded with industry and with people who had little protection against it. A town that lives by water and trade can also be hurt by water. The reader meets Manchester first as a place of danger and need.
The early chapters also set the tone of the book. The details are domestic and local, the people speak in the manner of their district, and kindness appears in poor homes as much as in rich ones. A rescued child becomes the center of a family, and the novel asks what makes a person belong. Is it blood, or is it care? That question runs through everything that follows.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
