A count who has never truly loved
The novel opens in Germano's rooms in Rome, where Elena arrives late and announces she must leave the city. She finds him pretending to doze before the fire. He has waited since half past four, and it is now six. She is not sorry. She says she forgot, because she was reading a sad book.
She will not tell him why she must go. Germano pleads, and then he tells her what kind of man he is. He has had many lovers and loved none of them. A woman to him is like a flower, to be tended for its scent. When a door closed in his face he never lingered.
Elena listens with a mocking smile. She says he is an actor, and that acting is life for someone who does it well. Germano is no villain who hides his nature. He confesses it freely and then acts against it anyway.
A man who explains himself so well can still fail to know himself.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
