Part 5, Chapter I of 170 · 1 min to read the chapter

In Chapter I, Abgarus, king of Edessa, writes to Jesus after hearing reports of extraordinary cures and asks him to come and heal his disease. He also offers room in his city, linking his request for help with an offer of shelter from people he hears intend Jesus harm.

What happens

  1. Abgarus addresses Jesus at Jerusalem and explains that reports of cures without medicines or herbs reach him.
  2. He lists reported healings, the expulsion of spirits and devils, and the raising of dead people.
  3. These reports convince him that Jesus is either God descended from heaven or God's Son.
  4. Abgarus asks Jesus to travel to him and cure his disease.
  5. He reports mockery and threats against Jesus and offers space in his small, pleasant city.
