A Gunfight Turns Buck Duane Into a Fugitive
Buck Duane is twenty-three, the son of a feared gunman. His uncle Jim warns him that a drunk cowboy named Cal Bain is hunting him in the town of Wellston. Duane feels a strange fever rise in his blood and fears it more than any man.
He walks the empty main street and meets Bain. Duane draws in the underhand style his father taught him and fires twice. A gambler lays the ace of spades over the two bullet holes, and a bystander says like father, like son.
Uncle Jim has a saddled horse ready at the gate. Duane learns that a fair fight under Texas law can still make a man an outlaw. That night a pale vision of the dying Bain lies in his campfire's glow, and it will return for years.
