De quoi parle ce livre ?
The Little Minister is a novel by J. M. Barrie, published in 1891. Barrie was a Scottish writer, and here he goes back to the weaving town of his childhood, which he calls Thrums in the book. The story is set in the 1840s, among a strict Auld Licht congregation that holds to its old ways. Barrie wrote it with humor and with deep affection for the stubborn people of the glen.
At its center is Gavin Dishart, a very young minister who has just taken his first pulpit. He is small, serious and eager to be respected. Then he meets a lively young woman who seems to belong to no church and no rulebook at all. You get a love story that tests a man's faith, a town full of sharp-tongued weavers, and a young woman who will not behave as expected. Let us begin with the minister and the town that is waiting to judge him.

A boy minister comes to Thrums
Thrums is a small town of weavers, built along a hill and a glen in the east of Scotland. Its people belong to the Auld Lichts, a strict branch of the Scottish church. They value plain worship, long sermons and an iron sense of right and wrong. Into this world comes Gavin Dishart, a young man fresh from his studies, appointed to be their minister.
Gavin is small in build, and the town soon gives him the nickname that titles the book. He is clever and sincere, and he badly wants to do his duty. But he is young, and the elders watch him closely. Among them is Lang Tammas, a stern figure who treats the faith as a serious matter and notices every slip.
Gavin lives with his mother, Margaret, who has sacrificed a great deal to see her son in a pulpit. Her pride in him is quiet but fierce, and her bond with Gavin is one of the warm threads running through the novel. Her good opinion matters to him more than almost anything. Barrie shows how much the two of them have shared, and how a mother's hopes can become a weight for a son.
Before any romance begins, the book gives us the town in sharp little portraits. We meet weavers who argue over doctrine as eagerly as over wages, and women who know every family secret. The humor comes from their dry speech and their pride. Barrie wants you to laugh at Thrums and love it in the same breath, and he sets the stage for a young man whose certainty is about to be shaken.
