Monterey celebrates expelling foreigners
In July 1840 Captain Miguel Peralta sits on his horse above Monterey bay and watches a Yankee bark sail for Acapulco. Aboard are about a hundred foreigners judged dangerous. His riders throw their hats in the air and shout against strangers.
The town answers with cannon fire and a Mass at Carmel Mission. Governor Alvarado then feasts the great families. The talk is uneasy, and General Vallejo says the Russians, the Swiss and the Yankees will all be a threat in time.
The narrator shows what the celebrating Californians cannot see. Gold lies in the Sierra rivers, and a man named Marshall will find it in a few years. Peralta asks to be released from duty so he can settle on his land. The Governor agrees and names him Commandant of the San Joaquin Valley.
A proud society feels safe, while the reader knows how little time it has left.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.
