The Life of Jesus, Chapter 18 summary

Chapter 18 of 30 · 12 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 18, Jesus forms a privileged circle of apostles, directs their preaching, and gives shared meals a central place in his followers’ life. The narrator presents these practices as foundations of the Church while distinguishing Jesus’ flexible teaching and vivid language from fixed rules, creeds, and literal understandings of the Eucharist.

What happens

  1. Jesus chooses the Twelve, reserves explanations for them, and sends them to announce the approaching kingdom while accepting household hospitality.
  2. He urges courteous greetings, rejects violent punishment for rejection, and tolerates outsiders who cast out demons using his name.
  3. The narrator describes collective religious authority but questions whether every statement supporting it comes from Jesus.
  4. Jesus offers no complete legal code or creed, writes nothing, and promises his followers instruction through the Holy Spirit.
  5. At Capernaum, his claims about eating his flesh and drinking his blood drive some disciples away, but the Twelve remain.
  6. The narrator traces the Eucharist to communal meals and explains its language through Jesus’ intensely concrete expressions of spiritual union.
