The Life of Jesus, Chapter 13 summary

Chapter 13 of 30 · 13 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Jesus visits Jerusalem with disciples, finds its religious life hostile, and condemns the commerce and sacrifices surrounding the temple. The narrator presents these encounters as a decisive break with inherited religious authority, as Jesus rejects the Law’s continuing force and calls people toward belonging based on love rather than ancestry.

What happens

  1. Jesus travels to Jerusalem for Passover, partly to respect Jewish opinion and partly to confront its religious center.
  2. His Galilean companions encounter contempt, while the city’s religious disputes and temple practices deepen his discomfort.
  3. The narrator reports that Jesus attacks temple merchants with a whip and overturns their tables.
  4. Jesus resents both the priests’ religious indifference and the Pharisees’ pride, but gains no established Jerusalem following.
  5. Nicodemus visits Jesus privately at night, feels drawn to him, but does not join his movement.
  6. The narrator presents Jesus as rejecting the Law and grounding religious belonging in love rather than descent.
