Chapter 13 of 33 · 16 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Hawkeye leads the travelers to a ruined blockhouse, where they rest above a burial mound and hear about an old battle and Mohican losses. When Hurons track them to the clearing, the pursuers’ respect for the dead keeps them from searching the shelter, allowing the travelers to escape unseen.

What happens

  1. Hawkeye guides the party to an abandoned blockhouse and explains that its grassy mound covers Mohawks killed in an earlier battle.
  2. He describes the loss of Mohican lands and relatives before helping prepare shelter while Uncas clears a spring.
  3. Chingachgook keeps watch while the others sleep, including Duncan, who unsuccessfully tries to remain awake.
  4. As the travelers prepare to leave after moonrise, approaching footsteps send them and their horses into the blockhouse.
  5. Two Hurons approach the ruin but withdraw after examining the burial mound, leaving the hidden travelers undiscovered.
  6. Once the pursuers disappear into the forest, the party quietly departs by a different route.
