De quoi parle ce livre ?
What does a small mongoose do when two cobras stand between a family and their garden? He runs and finds out, and then he fights. That is one way into The Kipling Reader, a collection of tales and poems by Rudyard Kipling, who grew up in India and wrote about it as someone who knew it well.
The book gathers stories about animals, officers, journalists and children, and closes with verse. Kipling wrote them in the late nineteenth century. You get quick plots, sharp characters and a lesson about courage, loyalty or home that never lectures.

A small mongoose guards a family from cobras
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi begins with a flood. A summer torrent sweeps a young mongoose from his burrow and leaves him half drowned on a garden path. A small boy named Teddy finds him, and the family wraps him in cotton wool until he sneezes awake.
The motto of his family is Run and find out, so Rikki explores the bathtubs, puts his nose in the ink and sleeps on Teddy's pillow. In the garden he meets Darzee, a tailor-bird, whose baby the cobra Nag has just eaten. Rikki escapes Nag and his wife Nagaina only because Darzee shouts a warning.
Then Rikki paralyzes Karait, a small dusty snake as deadly as a cobra, by biting high on its back. That night he overhears the cobras plotting to kill the humans and take back the garden, where their eggs lie hidden. A small animal with sharp eyes and a clear purpose can guard a whole house.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about L’anthologie Kipling : choix d’œuvres de Rudyard Kipling
What is The Kipling Reader about?
It is a selection of Rudyard Kipling's stories and poems. The tales include Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, Mowgli's Brothers, Wee Willie Winkie and A Matter of Fact, followed by verse such as The Native-Born and The Overland Mail.
Who is Rikki-Tikki-Tavi?
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a young mongoose who is washed out of his burrow by a flood and adopted by an English family. He protects their garden from the cobras Nag and Nagaina.
Who is Mowgli and who raises him?
Mowgli is a human child who wanders into a wolf cave in the Seeonee hills. Mother and Father Wolf raise him, and Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther teach him the Law of the Jungle.
Are the stories true and when were they written?
They are fiction, though many draw on real settings such as the Indian frontier, the Mutiny and the famine districts. Kipling wrote them in the late nineteenth century, and the lively voice and short scenes make them easy to follow.
What is the main message of the collection?
Many stories show that loyalty, courage and clear sight matter more than rank. Small figures such as a mongoose, a boy or a child often see what powerful adults miss, and the poems ask where home truly lies.
