The King in Yellow, Part 6 summary
Part 6 of 10 · 5 min to read the part
In The Prophets’ Paradise, a first-person speaker encounters figures who challenge his understanding of waiting, memory, fate, truth, beauty, and love through a series of separate scenes. The final encounter reverses Love’s demand for immediate action when the beloved rejects dishonoring jewels and asks instead to learn patience.
What happens
- A speaker waits inside his studio despite a passing song; the Phantom of the Past refuses to travel farther with him.
- The speaker delays crossing a guarded bridge, then enters despite the crowd’s claim that he arrives too late.
- Among a laughing crowd, the speaker loses his purse, but Pierrot’s remarks turn his anger toward Truth and her mirror.
- A jester repeats a tale of homecoming and stabbing; a Clown admires Death’s greater pallor.
- Love urges the speaker to offer dishonoring jewels, but the beloved rejects them, and Love instructs him to wait.
