Chapter 10 of 23 · 5 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 10, Montgomery gives the exhausted Prendick a sleeping drink but avoids explaining the creature that pursues him, and morning cries draw Prendick into the enclosure. Moreau violently forces him back into his room, where he fears that the men are vivisecting human beings and that he is also in danger.

What happens

  1. Montgomery receives the exhausted Prendick, locks his door, and gives him brandy and food.
  2. He avoids identifying Prendick’s pursuer and gives him a dark drink to help him sleep despite the puma’s cries.
  3. Prendick wakes in daylight, eats, and discovers that Montgomery leaves the door into the enclosure unlocked.
  4. Hearing what he identifies as human suffering, Prendick opens the door and sees blood and a bandaged figure bound to a frame.
  5. Moreau throws Prendick back into his room and locks him in, prompting fears of human vivisection and personal danger.
