The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano — Chapter 3 : résumé

Chapter 3 sur 12 · 25 min pour lire le chapter

In Chapter 3, the narrator passes from lonely plantation labor in Virginia into Michael Henry Pascal’s ownership, travels to England, and begins learning English customs and naval work. Friendship and growing knowledge ease many of his fears, while forced renaming, separation, illness, and warfare show how little control he has over his life.

Ce qui se passe

  1. Isolated in Virginia, the narrator works on a plantation and fears unfamiliar household objects before Michael Henry Pascal buys him.
  2. During the voyage to England, Pascal forces a new name on him, while Richard Baker offers friendship and help.
  3. In England and Guernsey, he encounters snow, church, and books, and receives care from several households.
  4. He joins Pascal aboard warships, learns naval tasks, and grows eager for combat, but illness confines him in London.
  5. After recovering, he follows Pascal through further naval appointments, parts from Dick, and witnesses the assault and capture of Louisbourg.
  6. Returning toward England, the fleet pursues French ships; after arriving, he accompanies Pascal to London with a press gang.
