Chez les heureux du monde in short

The House of Mirth follows Lily Bart from her first tea with Lawrence Selden to the point where her choices have narrowed to almost nothing. She is beautiful, clever and poor, and she needs a rich husband. Each time she gets close, an impulse, a rumor or a hidden debt pulls her away.

What Chez les heureux du monde is about

What would you give for one free afternoon? For Lily Bart, a single cup of tea in a bachelor's flat begins to cost more than she can pay. The House of Mirth opens in Grand Central Station on a Monday in early September, when the lawyer Lawrence Selden spots her waiting for a train and offers her tea.

Edith Wharton published this novel in 1905, and she knew the wealthy world of old New York she describes. Her heroine is twenty-nine, beautiful, clever and poor, with one asset and one aim, a rich husband. You follow Lily from drawing rooms to a Riviera yacht to a hat workroom, and you watch the people who admire her turn quickly to judging her.

À qui s’adresse-t-il ?. This book suits readers who love a heroine with real wit and real stakes, who enjoy sharp portraits of high society, and who like novels where money, marriage and friendship pull against each other.

The story in 7 parts

A single tea party sets everything moving

Lawrence Selden is crossing Grand Central Station when he sees Lily Bart standing alone. She has missed her train to the Trenors' country house, and the next one leaves in two hours. She laughs that people sit out a cotillion, so why not sit out a train, and Selden offers her tea.

They walk up Madison Avenue after a brief shower. Selden admires the shape of her small ear and the thick fringe of her lashes. He feels that a fine glaze of beauty has been laid over common clay, then wonders if the clay was fine and merely shaped by circumstance into something useless. At the Benedick, where he lives, she admires his balcony, and he invites her upstairs.

Over tea in his small library, Lily speaks with surprising honesty. She says she is poor and very expensive, that people are tired of her, and that they say she ought to marry. She adds that invitations depend as much on a woman's wardrobe as on her charm.

Then she asks odd questions about Americana, the rare old books on American history. Selden laughs and explains that collectors prize rarity, not reading. He does not see that she is gathering facts for a rich young man she means to impress. On the way out she meets Simon Rosedale, who owns the building. She tells him a clumsy lie, and he smiles as if he knows better. One careless hour can become a debt that someone else collects.

  • Lily Bart A beautiful, witty woman of twenty-nine, raised to marry money, who finds that her charm and her conscience pull in different directions.
  • Lawrence Selden A lawyer of modest means and ironic mind, drawn to Lily, who prizes personal freedom and fears being hurt.
  • Gerty Farish Selden's cousin, a kind, plain woman who runs a charity club and gives Lily steady friendship in a cramped flat.
  • Gus Trenor A rich, coarse husband who offers to invest for Lily and expects favors in return.
  • Bertha Dorset A restless, elegant woman who protects her own reputation and strikes at anyone who threatens it.

How it ends (spoiler)

Lily takes Gertie's friendship and Selden's last visit as a farewell. She repays her nine-thousand-dollar debt to Gus Trenor from her legacy, leaving herself very little. That night, unable to sleep, she takes a larger dose of her sleeping drops and dies in her sleep. Selden arrives next morning with the word he means to say and finds her lying dead. He understands, too late, what she had kept for him.
