In Chapter 9, Watson reports Stapleton’s interference in Sir Henry’s courtship and discovers that the Barrymores secretly feed Mrs. Barrymore’s escaped brother, Selden. What happens

  1. Watson examines Barrymore’s window and arranges with Sir Henry to watch the butler at night.
  2. Stapleton interrupts Sir Henry’s proposal to Miss Stapleton, then apologizes and secures a three-month pause in the courtship.
  3. After two nights of watching, Watson and Sir Henry catch Barrymore signaling with a candle.
  4. Mrs. Barrymore reveals that Selden is her brother and that the signals arrange deliveries of food.
  5. Watson and Sir Henry follow the answering light, hear a frightening howl, and unsuccessfully chase Selden.
  6. Watson sees a tall stranger on a tor, but the figure disappears before Sir Henry can see him.
