De quoi parle ce livre ?
The Headless Horseman is an adventure novel by Mayne Reid, an Irish-born writer who had lived and fought in America. It first appeared in the 1860s, and Reid set it on the Texas plains near the Leona River, a country he knew from his own years on the frontier. It mixes a love story, a rivalry between two proud men, a hunt for wild horses and a murder that nobody can explain. At its centre is a rider on a black horse who has no head.
In this summary you will meet the planter's family at Casa del Corvo, the Irish horse hunter who falls in love with the planter's daughter, and the cousin who hates him. You will see how the novel uses the prairie, the horse and the frontier court of the Regulators to build suspense. You will also learn what to watch for as the story tightens. We begin on the open plain, where a young woman and a stranger first meet.

A planter's family settles on the plains
The story opens in Texas, in the years before the Civil War, on the wide prairies near Fort Inge. Here stands Casa del Corvo, a grand hacienda that has been bought by Woodley Poindexter, a planter who has left Louisiana to start again. He brings his household, his slaves and his two grown children. Louise is his daughter, and Henry is his young son.
Reid describes the grass sea of the prairie, the chaparral thickets, the rivers and the hot sky, and he makes the land feel like a character of its own. The house is a place of wealth in the middle of wild country, and that contrast matters. Out here the rules of the old South meet the rules of the frontier, and neither fits comfortably.
Also living at the hacienda is Cassius Calhoun, Louise's cousin. He is a former Southern officer, hot-tempered and used to being obeyed. He hopes to marry Louise and he treats her as something close to his own property. He is proud of his name, quick to take offense and ready to settle quarrels by force.
From the start the family is set against its surroundings. Poindexter is rich but restless, Calhoun is arrogant, and Louise is bright and independent. The prairie is full of strangers who ride in and out, and the reader senses that one of them will upset the household's plans. That stranger is soon on his way.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
