A red-haired girl, a bulldog and a fight
The story opens at sunset in the great bazaar of Cairo. Damaris Hethencourt, almost eighteen, walks unveiled among kneeling men, her huge and very ugly bulldog Wellington at her heels. Her hair is vivid red, and she has no idea of the stir she causes.
She is looking for the corner where animals are sold. There a tall man in riding boots and a red tarbusch is looking at a hunting hawk. He is Hugh Carden Ali, son of an Arab sheikh and his English wife. People call him the Hawk of Egypt.
When a black jaguar strikes a pigeon, Wellington charges it. Hugh unchains the cat so that both may have a fair chance. Damaris hides her face against his shoulder, and something older than manners passes between them. That evening crimson roses lie beside her plate with no card.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Why is Hugh Carden Ali called the Hawk of Egypt?
He is a master falconer who has the emblem of the ancient hawk worked on his clothes, saddlecloths and hounds. He also owns a jewelled hawk found in a temple, and the title fits his mixed nature.

Is The Hawk of Egypt easy to follow?
Yes, the story moves from scene to scene with clear characters, vivid places and a humorous narrator. Short chapters, quick action and a lively cast of animals and servants help the reader along.
