The Gospel of Thomas, Chapter 4 summary

Chapter 4 of 10 · 3 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 4, Jesus uses plants, wine, and light to teach about conduct, loyalty, and belonging to the Kingdom, while his disciples question his identity and the coming world. His replies shift attention from expected events and dead prophets to what is already present but remains unrecognized.

What happens

  1. Jesus describes an unsound vine and unequal possession, then urges detachment; his disciples question who he is.
  2. He distinguishes forgiveness for blasphemy and connects good or evil speech with what the heart contains.
  3. He praises John the Baptist but places childlike knowledge of the Kingdom above him.
  4. Images of divided service, wine, and cloth stress incompatibility; peace between two people gives power to move a mountain.
  5. Jesus blesses the solitary and elect, then teaches answers about origins in light and the Father's sign.
  6. He says the expected reality is already present, challenges attention to dead prophets, and receives a question about circumcision.
