You will love this book if you enjoy domestic comedy, quick talk between friends, farm mishaps, and warm-hearted stories about how a marriage grows.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What if a proposal sounded like an invitation to dinner, with the guest as the main course? In the first chapter of The Gentle Art of Cooking Wives, four young women in a parlor club tease one another about a newspaper article called How to Cook Wives.
Elizabeth Strong Worthington built this comic novel around that one joke. Husbands are the cooks, wives are the fish, and the fire needs steady care. Randolph Chance boasts that managing a woman is as easy as falling off a log. His quiet friend Steve Loveland, who speaks mostly with a fireside poker, is not so sure. You get a gentle man, a wild young bride named Nannie, a cow with a grudge, and plain lessons about kindness.

A club of girls cooks up the question
The book opens in a parlor where four girls have formed a club. Prue is elected president before anyone calls for a vote. She keeps calling the girls to order, and Hilda keeps answering with jokes. The business before the house is a newspaper article called How to Cook Wives.
The scraps are funny because they sound like a recipe. First catch your fish. Start with a clear fire, not too hot. Some husbands, the writer says, make things so hot in private that their wives are reduced to cinders, then serve them cold in public.
Then the girls turn the cooking talk on one another. Puddy will be made into croquettes, and Prue will be baked in a genteel, modern way. Nannie cries that she will be roasted, just wait and see. We learn that she has no mother and never received a caress at home.
Walking down the avenue, Nannie watches children run to greet their fathers and feels something she cannot name. Then she hears in her head a voice calling, Wives for dinner, and she answers aloud, No, thank you.
A joke about cooking can carry a real fear of marriage.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.
