A gale drives the brig toward the ice
The story opens in the year 1801 aboard the Laughing Mary, a light brig sailing in ballast from Callao toward Cape Town. South of the Pacific's mild waters, a hurricane strikes with lightning and freezing rain. Paul Rodney, the mate, tells the tale in his own words.
The crew shelters in the cabin with Captain Rosy, who passes round a jar of whisky and says a man can die only once. The brig survives the night but loses spars, and the gale pushes her steadily south toward the polar cold. Ice glazes the rigging, the decks flood, and no fire can be lit.
This section sets the mood of the whole book. The sea is a force with a will of its own, and the narrator's dry, honest voice makes the danger feel close. It also prepares the first great shock, which comes out of the dark.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Le Pirate gelé

Who is Jules Tassard?
Tassard is a French pirate and third in command of the Spanish schooner Boca del Dragon. Rodney warms him back to life after he has lain frozen for decades, and his greed shapes the middle of the story.
