A masked stranger asks for shelter at midnight
The story opens at midnight on the last day of Carnival. Maria, the lovely glove maker of Porta Vittoria, is closing her shop when a masked man runs in and begs her to hide him. He says an enemy is chasing him, and his charming face and bright smile win her at once. She bolts the door.
Maria lends him one of her dresses so he can slip away in disguise. He is easy and playful, and he tells her that anyone she loved would be a happy man. When he leaves, he kisses her on the lips and vanishes into the dark street. His face hardens, and he mutters about revenge and about a woman named Adriana.
Maria climbs the stairs to the room she shares with her old mother and says nothing. She has never loved anyone, and she cannot sleep. That single night of Carnival sets every later event in motion.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.
