Readers who love sharp questions, clear argument and the roots of mathematics will enjoy it, as will anyone curious how logic, language and number fit together, from students of philosophy to puzzle lovers.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What is the number one? It sounds like a question for a child, yet Gottlob Frege shows in 1884 that many people cannot answer it well. Textbooks, mathematicians and philosophers give answers that clash or say nothing at all. Frege then builds a precise answer of his own, step by step. You will see why numbers are not heaps, feelings or properties like colour. You will see how he ties number to concepts and defines zero, one and the endless series of whole numbers using logic alone. Let us begin with the trouble he finds in the humble first number.

Even the number one lacks a definition
Frege opens with a plain question. What is the number one? Most people say it is a thing, but that is no definition. It says only that one belongs among things, not which thing it is.
The letter a in algebra merely expresses generality, so any number can replace it. The sign 1 is different. In one plus one equals two, you cannot put the moon in both places.
Frege finds it embarrassing that a great science cannot explain its simplest subject. He sets three principles. Keep the psychological apart from the logical. Ask for a word's meaning only within a whole sentence. Never lose the difference between a concept and an object.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Les Fondements de l’arithmétique
What is The Foundations of Arithmetic about?
It asks what numbers are and how arithmetic can be justified. Frege examines earlier views, rejects the ideas that number is a physical property or a mental image, and defines numbers using concepts and logic alone.
What does Frege mean by saying number belongs to a concept?
He means that a statement of number tells you something about a concept, not about a heap of things. Venus has zero moons says nothing falls under the concept moon of Venus.
Is arithmetic analytic or synthetic according to Frege?
Frege argues that arithmetic is analytic, meaning its truths can be proved from pure logic and definitions. He admits his book only makes this probable and that a gapless proof is still needed.
What is the context principle in this book?
It is the rule that a word has meaning only within a whole sentence, not in isolation. Frege uses it to show how number words can name objects without being mental pictures.
Is The Foundations of Arithmetic worth reading today?
Yes for anyone interested in the roots of logic and mathematics. It is organised in short numbered sections, uses clear examples such as playing cards and Jupiter's moons, and shows an argument being built carefully.
