À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

Readers who enjoy mountain landscapes, outdoor adventure and a warm romance across different worlds will love this novel. It also suits those drawn to the early Forest Service and a heroine skilled at riding and shooting.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What happens when a thin young man from Yale steps off a Colorado stagecoach and meets a girl who can outride, outwork and outwalk him? That is the setup of The Forester's Daughter, a romance by Hamlin Garland, published in 1914.

Garland drew the ranch, the mill and the ranger stations from real places he visited. He meant to write a weighty book about a forest supervisor. Instead his daughter Berrie took over. You get a mountain adventure, a love story and a picture of the early Forest Service, with a snowstorm, a mountain lion and a town of gossips.

A dusty stage ride brings two worlds together

The story opens on the stage line from Williams to Bear Tooth, where a battered coach crosses one hundred and twenty miles of Colorado twice a week. Beside the driver, Bill McCoy, sits a pale young man from Connecticut who has come to rebuild his lungs. Bill is quick to label strangers, so the tourist soon becomes a lunger in his mind.

Two riders race down from a ranch to stop the coach, and the tourist takes them for bandits. Bill laughs at him, for they are girls. One is Berea McFarlane, going home after weeks in the East. Everyone along the route greets her warmly.

They walk ahead of the coach to a grove of old cedars that moan in the wind. He finds the place ghostly, and she admits the trees look like poor old women. When the stage reaches Bear Tooth at night, a tall man greets her, and Norcross assumes he is her cowboy lover. First impressions in this book are generous and wrong at once.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about La Fille du garde forestier

What is The Forester's Daughter about?

It is a romance set in the Colorado mountains. Berea McFarlane, the daughter of a Forest Supervisor, falls in love with Wayland Norcross, a frail young man from Yale, while jealous rivals and gossips stir up trouble around them.

Who is Berrie McFarlane in the book?

Berrie is the Supervisor's only child. She rides, hunts and camps as well as any man, helps run her father's office and is courted by several men, but she is drawn to the gentle visitor from the East.

Is The Forester's Daughter a true story?

No. Hamlin Garland says in his foreword that Berrie and Wayland are invented. The golden trail and the camp on the lake come from real trips he made in 1909 and 1910, and the book appeared in 1914.

Who is Clifford Belden?

Clifford Belden is a Colorado cattleman engaged to Berrie at the start. He is fierce and jealous, and his family owns part of a saloon and a mill that trouble the forest rangers.

Is The Forester's Daughter easy to read?

Yes, in plain terms: the story moves along with short scenes, lively dialogue and clear mountain settings. Each chapter has its own journey or turn, so it is easy to follow in a few sittings.
