À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers who love puzzles about books, writers and readers, and anyone who has argued over what a story really means. This comic and unsettling mystery explores hidden meaning and obsession.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

The Figure in the Carpet is a short story by Henry James, first published in 1896. It is a comic and unsettling tale about reading. A young critic is told by a novelist that all his books hide one secret idea. Nobody has ever found it. Then the critic cannot stop looking for it.

James wrote it in the middle of his career, at a time when he was thinking hard about critics, reviews and the odd bond between a writer and his readers. The tale is told by a young man who never gives his name. He is a reviewer, a little vain, and very eager to be clever. What you get here is a mystery with no corpse and no crime. The only question is whether a hidden meaning exists at all, and what the search does to the people who chase it. In the next part, we begin where the trouble begins, at a country house party and one careless review.

A review stings the novelist

The story opens with the narrator, a young critic who writes for the papers. He has just published a review of the latest book by Hugh Vereker, a novelist whose work he admires. He is proud of the piece and hopes it shows how sharp he is. He is also invited to a weekend at Bayham, the house of Lady Jane, where Vereker will be a guest.

There the narrator is thrilled to find that Vereker has read his review. Hope turns to embarrassment fast. Vereker is polite, but he makes it clear that the piece, like most of the praise he receives, has missed the point. The narrator is hurt, and he is also curious, because he cannot see what he has missed.

The scene is a small comedy of manners. A young man who thinks he understands an author is gently shown that he does not. Vereker is not cruel. He is tired. He has spent years being praised for the wrong things, and he speaks with weary good humour.

That is the first turn of the story. The narrator's pride is wounded, and a question is planted in his mind. What is it that the clever critics have all failed to see? From this moment he cannot read Vereker, or any book, in the old easy way.

The party also gives James a chance to sketch the world of literary London, with its gossip, its reputations and its small vanities. Everyone has an opinion about Vereker. Almost no one has looked closely enough to be sure of it. That quiet joke at the critics' expense runs through the whole tale.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
