For readers who love seeing a big idea tested on a familiar subject, and anyone curious about the roots of modern atheism and humanism.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What if God did not make us in his image, but we made God in ours? In 1841 the young German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach, trained in theology and then in Hegel, wrote The Essence of Christianity to ask what religion really is. His answer is bold. Wisdom, goodness, love and power are things we first found in ourselves and then placed outside ourselves. He goes through the main Christian teachings one by one, and he can be harsh toward believers. He wants to bring their treasure back home.

Point clé 1 sur 9

Religion begins in human self-awareness

Feuerbach starts with a simple point. Humans, unlike animals, can take their own nature as an object of thought. A person can ask what a person is. This self-awareness is the root of religion.

He names three powers in the human essence. They are reason, will and heart. Each feels unlimited from the inside. The individual is limited, but the human species is not, and together we know, do and love far more than one life can.

We set that boundless side apart as another being and call it God. Believers are not fools. They look at something real, human nature at its best, and mistake whose nature it is.

Questions about L’Essence du christianisme

What is The Essence of Christianity about?

It argues that God is a projection of human nature. Feuerbach goes through Christian teachings such as the incarnation, the Trinity and prayer, and claims each one expresses human needs, hopes and qualities in the form of belief in a divine being.

What does Feuerbach mean by projection?

Projection means that humans take their own best qualities, such as reason, will and love, and place them in an imagined being outside themselves. People then worship that being and forget that its traits came from human nature.

Was Feuerbach an atheist?

His book treats God as a human creation, so most readers call his view atheist, though he saw himself as rescuing the true meaning of religion. He hoped love of humanity would take the place of worship of a separate God.

When was The Essence of Christianity written and who did it influence?

It was published in 1841 in German. It influenced Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and later thinkers such as Freud and Nietzsche. Marx answered it in his Theses on Feuerbach of 1845.

Is The Essence of Christianity hard to read?

It is a philosophical work with a clear plan, and its main thesis is stated early and repeated.
