À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

You will enjoy this book if you love sharp, witty observations about human nature, or wonder what really makes people content, or like philosophy that speaks plainly about money and praise.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What makes a life happy? Is it money, a good name, or something much closer to home? Arthur Schopenhauer, the German philosopher, gives his answer in The Wisdom of Life, a practical guide that sets his famous gloom to one side and asks how a person can live as well as possible.

He admits in the preface that a happy life rests on a mistake, since his own philosophy finds existence full of suffering. So he takes the ordinary point of view for the exercise. The result is a set of sharp, often funny observations on health, money, honor, and fame. Let us begin with his boldest claim, that your happiness depends mostly on what you are.

Point clé 1 sur 8

Your happiness depends mostly on what you are

Schopenhauer sorts everything that shapes a human lot into three groups. The first is what a person is: health, temperament, character, and intelligence. The second is what a person has, meaning property. The third is how others see a person, which covers reputation, rank, and fame.

He claims the first group outweighs the other two by a wide margin. Nature sets those differences, while the other two come from human arrangements. Rank is a king on a stage, an actor in a crown. A person of great mind is a king in real life. Everything that happens to you happens inside your own consciousness, and your consciousness colors it. Two people can live through the same event, and one finds a tragedy where the other finds a curiosity. Readers envy the adventures behind a poem, he says, when they should envy the imagination that turned plain events into poetry.

So use the gifts you have and choose work that suits them. Wealth, once real needs are met, adds little, and a rich heir with an empty head ends up poor outside as well as inside.

Look first to your own character, because it goes with you everywhere and no one can take it away.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about The Essays of Arthur Schopenhauer: The Wisdom of Life

What is The Wisdom of Life about?

It is a guide to living well, built from short essays on what makes people content. Schopenhauer looks at health, cheerfulness, money, leisure, reputation, honor, and fame, and argues that what you are matters far more than what you own.

What does Schopenhauer mean by what a person is, has, and represents?

He sorts all the things that shape a human lot into three groups. What a person is covers health and character, what a person has covers property, and what a person represents covers reputation, rank, and fame in others' eyes.

What does philistine mean in this book?

For Schopenhauer a philistine is a person with no mental needs, who finds pleasure only in the body and in status. Such a person, he says, cannot escape boredom, because intellectual pleasures are closed to him.

Is The Wisdom of Life easy to read?

It reads as a series of brief, lively essays. Each section makes one point, backs it with a vivid example, and often adds a joke, so you can read it a chapter at a time and still follow the argument.

What is the main message of the book?

Happiness comes mainly from within. Look after your health, nurture a cheerful temper, build a rich mind, use money to gain independence, and care less about what others think of you.
