The Critique of Pure Reason, Part 27 summary

Part 27 of 79 · Part 2: Transcendental Logic · 2 min to read the part

In What Objective Unity of Self-Consciousness Is § 14, the argument distinguishes the necessary unity that makes representations relate to an object from the contingent unity produced by empirical association. Only transcendental apperception has objective validity, while empirical connections depend on particular conditions and can differ between people.

What happens

  1. Transcendental apperception unites the manifold of intuition within an object's concept, giving this unity objective status.
  2. Subjective unity concerns how inner sense presents the manifold under empirical conditions.
  3. Association produces contingent connections, including whether representations appear simultaneous or successive.
  4. The pure form of temporal intuition depends on original consciousness through its necessary relation to the thinking self.
  5. Different people associate a word with different things, showing that empirical unity lacks necessary, universal validity.
