De quoi parle ce livre ?

A heart wants something and cannot quite hold it. That is the thread through The Courtesan Jamaica, six short tales by the German writer Hans Bethge. Bethge writes with a poet's eye, full of moonlight, rapeseed fields, carousels and sea air. We begin with the courtesan who gives the book its name.

A courtesan who steals a man's heart

The first tale is told by a man who sees a woman walking down a city street on an early summer day. She wears a large black hat whose feathers sway like dark sails. Her faint brown tint earns her the name Jamaica. He follows her until she climbs into a carriage and is gone.

When he sees her again, a friend tells him she is a courtesan, who has had a prince, an artist, and now a Swedish count. She never comes to the square where he waits, yet he finds her in a box beside a blond man.

Soon she cries out that she loves him, but she will not give up the count. When the count goes away, she asks the narrator to join her at a Baltic resort. There an Englishman with a pipe appears on the next veranda. Her laughter changes, and a dangerous thought takes hold of the narrator.

Questions about La courtisane Jamaica

What is The Courtesan Jamaica about?

Most tales follow a man and a woman whose feelings pull them apart through pride, jealousy, carelessness or fear.

Who is Jamaica in the book?

Jamaica is a courtesan with a southern face and a brown tint to her skin, like a lit meerschaum pipe. She is proud and graceful, and she travels to the Baltic sea with the narrator.

What are the six stories in the book?

They are Jamaica the Courtesan, Castle Carnin, The Beloved's Portrait, Foggy Night, Ebeth and The Friend's Wedding. Each stands alone, with its own people and setting, so you can read them one at a time.

Is The Courtesan Jamaica easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that each tale is short and clear, with simple scenes and a lively, poetic voice. The stories move through memorable places such as a seaside villa, a manor park and a village in fog.

What is the main message of the stories?

The tales show how easily love is lost when people look at the wrong thing, hold their pride too tightly, or want freedom more than closeness. Their lovers are young and unable to say what they feel.
