In Chapter 6, Villefort celebrates his betrothal to Renée among royalists who urge him to prove his loyalty through harsh prosecutions, despite his father's political past. 4. The Comte de Salvieux reports the king's approval of Villefort and his marriage, strengthening the young magistrate's enthusiasm.
  5. Called away briefly, Villefort returns and reads an anonymous letter accusing Edmond Dantès of carrying messages for Napoleon's supporters.
  6. Villefort confirms that Dantès is detained at his house and leaves after answering Renée's renewed plea for mercy.
