The Count of Monte Cristo, Chapter 19 summary

Chapter 19 of 117 · Volume 1 · 16 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 19, repairs block the prisoners’ escape route, and Faria suffers a fatal attack despite Dantès’ attempts to revive him with medicine. After receiving his friend’s blessing and renewed assurance about the treasure, Dantès listens unseen as officials confirm the death and place the body in a sack.

What happens

  1. Faria explains how to find the treasure, while Dantès doubts it remains and values his friend’s teaching above wealth.
  2. Repairs to the seaside gallery block the escape route without exposing the prisoners’ secret contact.
  3. Faria suffers another attack, blesses Dantès, and urges him to remember the treasure on Monte Cristo.
  4. Dantès administers the medicine, but Faria dies as dawn arrives.
  5. Hidden nearby, Dantès hears officials confirm death with a heated iron and arrange an evening burial.
  6. After the body is placed in a sack and everyone leaves, Dantès enters Faria’s cell.
