Loss shows what you really depended on

Boethius writes verses of complaint, with the Muses beside his bed. He believes the charge against him is false. He thinks he is being punished for defending honest men.

Then a woman appears, very old yet still strong, her height shifting from human size to the sky. She drives away the Muses who feed his grief. This is Lady Philosophy, and she has come to heal him.

She rebukes him before hearing his long complaint. Her diagnosis is forgetfulness. He has forgotten that the world has a purpose, and he thought fortune's gifts belonged to him. A crisis shows where we placed our trust.
