In I, a mysterious woman appears beside the grieving narrator and drives away the Muses of Poetry, accusing them of deepening his suffering rather than curing it. She takes a place beside his couch and begins to address his troubled mind, while he remains unable to identify her.

Ce qui se passe

  1. As the narrator records his grief, a dignified woman appears with blazing eyes, changing height, and an ancient, damaged robe.
  2. She carries a notebook and a staff and finds the Muses of Poetry supplying the narrator with words of lament.
  3. She accuses the Muses of nourishing suffering and weakening reason, especially in someone educated in philosophy.
  4. The Muses leave in shame after she orders them away and claims the patient for her own Muses.
  5. Unable to recognize her through his tears, the narrator waits silently as she sits beside him and begins her lament.
